Today we are headed to steamy Savannah Georgia to a unique dining experience with your pup.
Established in 1733, the oldest city in Georgia has a long history. Georgia was steeped in the Civil War as a major strategic port. It is, still today, a very important American seaport and industrial center. Savannah was founded by James Oglethorpe, who also planned the city in what became known as the “Oglethorpe Plan.”
Savannah is a major tourist attraction with its history and architectural history. Every year, Savannah hosts millions of visitors to walk its cobblestone streets and visit its historic mansions. Savannah has a rich history from which to choose, such as the birthplace of the founder of the Girl Scouts, Juliette Gordon Low; the oldest antebellum railway facility; the First African Baptist Church, which is one of the oldest congregations of its kind in the United States; and the Temple Mickve Israel, the third-oldest synagogue in the country.
Savannah is full of things to do. There are 22 downtown park areas in the Savannah Historic District. The Savannah Victorian Historic District was dedicated in 1966 and is one of the oldest historic districts in the United States. When Atlanta hosted the Olympics in they summer of 1996, Savannah held a sailing competition in the local Warsaw Sound.
One of the beautiful, historic mansions of Savannah is The Olde Pink House. Built in 1771, not long after the city was established, it now houses a popular restaurant after serving as a home, a bank, Confederate Headquarters, a tea room and an antique shop.
The beautiful pink façade welcomes visitors to the house, which is believed to be haunted. Dogs are not allowed inside, but there is an outdoor courtyard patio where they will serve you and your loyal companion as you try to see ghostly faces in the upstairs windows, particularly that of James Habersham, Jr - one of the original family members in the 1700s. People have reportedly seen his apparition enjoying the visitors to his home, and some have even reported having an entire conversation with someone clad in colonial garb thinking the person was a period actor for the restaurant - only to find him gone in the blink of an eye. Several other, possibly family, ghosts have been spotted in the house, even interacting with patrons.
Skeptics might blame the ale, but I like to think there’s some magic to it.
The restaurant has an expansive southern menu. From the “Southern Sushi” (smoked shrimp and grits rolled in coconut-crusted nori) to the “Crispy Scoured Flounder with Apricot Shallot Sauce,” you are sure to find something you will absolutely love. Don’t forget to ask about their signature cocktails to round out your evening.
Wait until you see the patio. Huge glass doors open up to a patio with gorgeous greens and a black metal fence for upscale al-fresco dining. You and your dog will feel like southern royalty with this atmosphere. Order a cocktail and enjoy your trip through the menu. If you get a chance, check out the inside, as well, so you can see the incredible historic southern architecture and design.
As always, do not forget to ask about dessert. We only go around once with our pups. Maybe, if it is acceptable, they might have a little vanilla ice cream for your pup, too.
