Meet Max, the Canine Mayor of Idyllwild, California

Meet Max, the Canine Mayor of Idyllwild, California

Henlo, Frens!

It’s a beautiful day to be a dog!

Today, we have a super fun blog for you! In the complicated world of politics, sometimes there is simplicity.

On February 9th, 2013, Maximus “Max” Mighty-Dog Mueller beat thirteen other dogs and two cats to become the Mayor of the unincorporated town of Idyllwild, California. Unincorporated towns do not have a mayor, so the town chose to have one elected after Idyllwild’s local nonprofit, Animal Rescue Friends (ARF), sponsored the election. The ARF oversees all non-human elections in the town of Idyllwild.

Max worked hard for his one-year term in office and continued to a second term, but unfortunately passed away during his second term. He was succeeded by a relative, Max II, who was voted into office by the people of Idyllwild with overwhelming support. Max II served nearly nine terms in office until he passed away in 2022. Max had come to Idyllwild with two relatives, Mikey and Mitzi, who served as co-mayors until the end of his ninth term.

Max III arrived in Idyllwild in September of 2022 and was elected to Mayoral duties on December 10th of the same year. Mikey and Mitzi became Vice-mayors to Max III. Max III continues to serve as the Mayor of Idyllwild California to this very day, June 4th, 2023.

Politics, at times, can seem so complicated and full of angst. Many times when I have gotten bogged down in the news, I think about my dogs, laying on the couch, completely oblivious to the issues of the day. While politics are necessary for human organization, dogs know nothing of our anxieties about how the human world. The people of Idyllwild have found joy in politics amidst the sea of endless difficulties in the world.

They’ve learned to make the best of life.

I think there is great wisdom in this. So many times, I forget to stop and look around myself. I’ll be sitting at the computer doing my work and a nose will flip my arm right off of the keyboard. They want to go outside and play.

So we go outside and play. Work can wait. For now. We only have one term with them, and we voted them in, so let’s let them show us how to be more joyful…

Because a dog’s joy makes the world a better place.

Be well. Be joyful. And keep it fluffy, friends.
