Today we head to a small town off the beaten path: my hometown of Raymond, Maine. A quiet town in the heart of the Sebago Lakes Region of Maine, Raymond is a small gem that has been the best kept secret of generations of families for decades. From gorgeous backroad drives to great eats to lake beaches, Raymond is a great, quiet place to take your pup.
Vacation rentals are the best bet (as of this writing) for places to stay with your pup in Raymond. Definitely check for properties on the water! And don’t forget to check Panther Pond as well as Sebago Lake. Many dog-friendly vacation rentals can be found on BringFido. (Link below.)
There are multiple places to take your pup to eat on outdoor patios. One of my favorite is, by far, the Fisherman’s Catch. This place has been around since before I was born and I was a huge fan of their hot dog with onion rings (I know…not fish. I was not a fish kid…). My father and mother loved the fried haddock and shrimp and my step mom loves the fried haddock and scallops. Being that Maine is a coastal state, all of the fish is as fresh as it gets. Inside Fisherman’s Catch are huge tanks and ice coolers housing live lobsters and fish on ice that people can also take home to cook. This place does it all.

What to do after lunch? Unfortunately, the public beaches are not pet friendly and Point Sebago park is not pet-friendly in the summer between April 1 and September 30. BUT this doesn’t mean there is nothing to do! There are several hiking trails in Raymond that you can take with your pup. The first trail that comes up at AllTrails is the Highlands Look via the Pismire Bluff Trail. The views from this trail system, maintained by Loon Echo Land Trust, are spectacular. The second hike that appears is the Spiller Homestead Loop. Grab a Swift River Roasters coffee and a bottle of water from The Good Life Market and head out to the trail! Please be sure to dispose of or recycle your waste later on in the appropriate receptacles to protect our trails. The Loon Echo Land Trust website lists use rules for bringing your furry companion.
The Spiller family goes way back in the history of the town, prior to William J. Spiller’s birth in 1828. Raymond was settled by a Cape Elizabeth captain in 1770 and the town was founded in 1803. Raymond was on the stagecoach route to Bridgton, another great small town to visit in the Lakes Region of Maine. The towns of Naples and Casco were annexed from the town of Raymond in 1829 and 1841, respectively.
After your hike, you will likely be hungry again! I know I always am. Like my dog, Samantha, I love food. Head back to the Good Life Market for dinner. You can eat outside with your dog on their picnic tables or take-out and eat directly across the street from the traffic light at the memorial monument. Oh! How can I forget the “market” part of the Good Life Market? Awesome food, gifts and beverages (also local beer and a huge wine selection).
After dinner, head on over to The Mosquito for awesome ice cream. They have a doggy offering called the “Poly Dog” and their endless human flavors will have you unable to decide what you’re going to have. I remember how excited we all were when we were kids when this place opened! It is so awesome. You can stay there and have your ice cream outside with your pup, or…
Now, you can’t take your dog on to Raymond Beach and have your ice cream, but what you can do is drive over to Raymond Beach and sit in your car with your dog and watch the awesome sunset over Sebago Lake with your pup. Put the top down or open up the moon roof and enjoy the evening.
You’ll likely be tired after such a full day, so your dog-friendly vacation rental on the water awaits you and your pup for an evening swim. Raymond, Maine is a great family-friendly, off-the-beaten-path option for you and your pup and they are ready to welcome you with open arms.
